$26 million in federal funding has been provided to OnStream for the Louisiana offshore carbon storage hub
The U.S. DOE recently provided the $26 million CarbonSAFE Phase III grant, which will be put to use in advancing OnStream’s development of the GeoDura CO2 Storage Hub. This hub will be built with the ability to hold more than 250 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in an area which is located offshore of Cameron Parish.
It has been planned that the grant will be provided to assist OnStream in handling work related to the project’s geological assessment. Plus on top of this, it will also permit community engagement.
Right now, GeoDura is expected to become the State’s first multi-source offshore carbon storage hub and it is also expected that injection operations will begin in 2028.
So far, the project has made a lot of progress, this is shown through how it has already, ‘obtained all necessary permits and approvals from the applicable governmental agencies for the drilling of a stratigraphic test well’, plus it has already, ‘commenced well-site preparation to drill stratigraphic test well’ on top of this, it has worked on, ‘finalising the Class VI permit for submittal to the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources’ and finally, the commercial negotiations’ are ‘underway for CCS solutions with industrial customers in the region.’
Enbridge's Vice President of Business Development, Vince Paradis, commented, "Carbon capture and storage projects are part of the solution to help lower greenhouse gas emissions. OnStream's GeoDura carbon storage project will enable customers to safely and permanently sequester carbon dioxide and we're excited to work with them to help companies in Louisiana meet their emission reduction goals."
