Dr.-Ing. Benjamin Happek serves as the General Manager of Energy & Hydrogen at Hyundai Motor America, based in Orange County, California, reporting to Senior Vice President James Park.
He began his career as a Research Engineer at Mercedes-Benz Group AG in Southern Germany, focusing on enhancing fuel efficiency and durability in diesel and gasoline engines for trucks and passenger vehicles. During this time, he earned a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Duisburg-Essen.
At Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea, Dr. Happek contributed to Powertrain Development before transitioning to Commercial Vehicle R&D. In 2018, he was part of the team that developed the XCIENT Fuel Cell HD truck platform, which saw its first customer deployments in Switzerland in 2020.
In 2023, Dr. Happek moved into business development, successfully leading the launch of the XCIENT Fuel Cell 6x4 tractor in the U.S. as part of the NorCAL ZERO Project in Oakland, California. This initiative marked the largest deployment of Class 8 fuel cell electric trucks in North America.
Today, the XCIENT Fuel Cell stands as the only commercial fuel cell electric truck available in the U.S., where Hyundai also recently deployed 21 of these vehicles for logistics operations at their Metaplant in Savannah, Georgia.
