Paebbl scales up innovative carbon-capture technology

Paebbl is a European start-up company who is currently focusing on the process of scaling-up their innovative carbon-capture technology. This technology is unique as it uses a sequestration process, which works through the mineralisation of captured carbon.

Paebbl recently made the move to take the technology further and put it to use outside the lab. Following this development, a new 500L batch production was commissioned by the company, this production unit was called ‘Obelix’. According to the company, Obelix was able to increase Paebbl’s Co2 processing capacity by 100x within a short time frame of just under six months. The reactor is now capable of producing a maximum of 100 tons per year, of material which is capable of storing carbon.

Paebbl has managed to create a process which mineralises captured carbon dioxide and from this, produces raw materials, which are then used in construction. This end result is achieved through a low-energy patented process, developed by Paebbl. The company’s reactors begin by converting Co2 into Co3 by adding water and ground silicate rocks, which once combined, produce a solid carbonate-based material. This results in an excellent production rate of to one ton of Co2 stored, the process creates two-and-a-half tons of material. The company has said that the silica-enriched mineral, has the ability to be used as an industrial filler or an ingredient within building materials. The benefit of using this material is that it reduces the carbon footprint of concrete by an estimated 70%.

The company, Paebbl, was founded in 2021 and with around 20 employees based across Rotterdam, Helsinki and Stockholm, the company’s next plans involve looking into the process of shipping samples created by Obelix. The company will ship to early adopter customers and this will begin as early as 2024.

Co-founder and co-CEO of Paebbl, commented, “With over two decades of research going into our technology, Obelix is a clear statement of intent that we are committed to meeting the strong industry demand for our products. Obelix is an important milestone that will allow us to cater to the wider industry, and the next step on our path to decarbonise the built environment – which currently accounts for 38% of global carbon emission. Our current mission is to scale-up our technology as fast as possible so that we can meet the needs of the market and the planet.”
