Calpine has signed a cost share with the DOE around the Sutter Decarbonisation Project

A new project has been specifically designed to capture 95% of existing carbon dioxide emissions. This project features ION Clean Energy’s carbon capture technology and it is intended to be used at the Sutter Energy Center.

Calpin is the company which set this project up and the first steps within this DOE cooperative agreement will commence soon and will be quickly followed by other phases once the first one is complete. Before commencing, the plans for the next phase, the company will ensure that previous steps have been completed successfully.

Overall, the project is on track to capture an estimated 1.75 million metric tons of CO2 on an annual basis. On top of this, ION has also recently announced a $45 million round of Series A financing that took place with Chevron New Energies and Carbon Direct Capital. As well as this, the arrival of President &CFO Steve Hirsh, Chief Operating Officer Ben Gurtler and VP, Human Resources Jeannie Donovan has been announced.

Calpine’s Senior Vice President, West Region, Alex Makler, commented, “We are pleased to have reached this milestone in the development of our Sutter Decarbonization Project. This initial Phase 1 commitment by the DOE will support the engineering and design of the project, further our community engagement, and advance project planning. We are grateful to be working together with the local community and elected officials in Sutter County and Yuba City and are pleased to have their continued support.”
