An agreement over a CO2 carrier has been made between Project Greensand and Royal Wagenborg

It has been planned that through a multi-year agreement, a newly built CO2 carrier will be created by Royal Wagenborg. This carrier will be dedicated to Project Greensand and overall, the project will be led by INEOS, along with their partners Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden.

This agreement with Royal Wagenborg is very significant as it marks the first time that a deployment of a dedicated CO2 vessel for Project Greensand has taken place. The carrier will become an extremely important component when it comes to putting together a full CO2 capture, transport and storage value chain. Furthermore, the purpose of the CO2 carrier, will be to facilitate large-scale transport of carbon dioxide to the Greensand storage site, which is based in the Danish North Sea.

So far, Project Greensand has made an excellent world-first achievement, which was conducting the safe, cross-border transport of CO2 for injection into a depleted oil field. The first of these injection of CO2 into the Danish subsoil in the North Sea, took place in March of 2023.

CEO INEOS Energy David Bucknall, commented, “The lack of dedicated CO2 carriers has been a bottleneck for advancing CCS projects within Europe. The collaboration between INEOS and Royal Wagenborg serves as a breakthrough moment for the EU’s climate goals, offering a viable solution for large-scale CO2 transport. The agreement highlights the commitment of INEOS, Royal Wagenborg, and the governments of the Netherlands and Denmark to achieving a sustainable and low-carbon future.”

Head of INEOS Energy DK, Mads Weng Gade, added, “INEOS has been in the leading edge of demonstrating safe and efficient storage in the pilot phase of Project Greensand, and we have the ambition to establish the first CO2 storage within the EU in Greensand by 2026. The agreement between Royal Wagenborg and INEOS is a very important step towards the establishment of the full value chain of CCS on an industrial scale.”
