An agreement to create sustainable CO2 management project in Spain has been made between Heidelberg Materials and Enagás

A new agreement has been signed between the CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo and the CEO of Heidelberg Materials Hispania, Jesús Ortiz. This agreement focuses on the decision to jointly develop a decarbonisation project which is related to the capture, transmission, liquefaction and finally, the subsequent permanent storage or use of carbon dioxide.

Within the agreement, the terms of the collaboration have been laid out and they states that, ‘Heidelberg Materials will develop CO2 capture technologies at its facilities in northern Spain.’ Whilst on the other hand, ‘Enagás, for its part, will study transmission, liquefaction, storage and ship loading solutions at its regasification terminals.’

Currently reducing CO2 emissions and also reducing their transmission is rapidly growing in interest. This growth has led to the agreement creating a plan in which the two companies will create a feasibility study, which will be the technical design of the CO2 capture and transport infrastructure, which will also include the quality specifications and an economic study.

The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, commented, “this agreement will allow Enagás, together with an industrial benchmark such as Heidelberg Materials, to make progress in our joint commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and to play a relevant role in achieving the decarbonisation objectives of Spain and Europe.”

Gonzalo continued, “the development of more effective technologies for sustainable CO2 management is key to successfully tackling the decarbonisation of non-emitting sectors.”

CEO of Heidelberg Materials Hispania, Jesús Ortiz, mentioned, “At Heidelberg Materials Hispania, we want to contribute to the transformation of the building materials sector in Spain, based on the know-how and global leadership of our group. We offer our customers sustainable products and solutions tailored to their needs and their own sustainability targets, including 100% carbon-free products, thanks to CO2 capture. I am confident that the path we are taking will be a reference and an incentive to move towards a sustainable construction model committed to carbon neutrality and the circular economy in Spain.”
