Panel Discussion: Overcoming the Challenges of Hydrogen Storage in Salt Caverns
25 Jun 2025
Infrastructure and Integration
Salt caverns are a viable option for hydrogen storage, they can store large volumes of hydrogen to be delivered when required. However, finding a suitable location and creating a storage cavern has numerous challenges such as depth, quantity and quality of the salt. Once built, there are several additional challenges to overcome such as hydrogen loss, cavity deformation due to salt creep as well as the need for high volumes of fresh water and brine disposal.
