Fuels, chemicals, and concrete: Emerging CO2 utilization applications can accelerate CCUS deployment

25 Jun 2025
Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage

Carbon dioxide utilization (CO2U) technologies have the potential to make CO2 capture economically viable even in the absence of carbon pricing and tax incentives, supporting the decarbonization of the world’s economy as countries strive to reach net-zero goals. While enhanced oil recovery has dominated this space historically, significant growth is expected for emerging CO2-derived fuels, chemicals, and concrete products driven by new synthesis pathways, regulatory demand, and additional revenue streams.

This presentation will provide an overview of CO2U technologies for fuels, chemicals, and concrete, discussing the technical and economic aspects of these application areas. Leading and emerging carbon dioxide utilization players will be identified, and market potential will be forecasted.

The following points will be addressed:

  •          Innovations in synthesis routes for CO2 recycling into fuels, chemicals, and concrete products – including thermochemical, electrochemical, biological conversion, and accelerated carbonation.
  • Discussion of scale, TRL (technology readiness level), and profitability for promising CO2U technologies.
  •          What are the key drivers and hurdles for CO2U market growth?
