Panel Discussion- A pathway to blue: pioneer's experience in applying today's evolving standards to an existing facility’s low carbon products
Coffeyville Resources Nitrogen Fertilizers, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of CVR Partners, LP located in Coffeyville, Kansas, is a fertilizer facility in North America that has been capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) in its manufacturing process since 2013. The plant is unique in that it utilizes a petroleum coke, or pet coke, gasification process to produce hydrogen. The CO2 collected at the pet coke gasification unit is used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Captured CO2 is also utilized to produce urea, a component of urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) fertilizer. In 2019, a nitrous oxide (N2O) abatement reactor was installed to mitigate N2O emissions from one of the nitric acid plants at the facility. These greenhouse gas mitigations have led to the production of low carbon ammonia and UAN fertilizer. However, there have been challenges in seeking certification as “low carbon” and getting recognition for the environmental benefits of their process. We will discuss the status of blue ammonia certification and 45Q tax credit recognition from their real-world experience.
