The mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement in the bulk material can be strongly influenced by the interactions of the material surface chemistry with the environmental variables.  As we are discovering, surface chemistry may be more critical to the life cycle of a component than is bulk chemistry. Additionally, the tendency of hydrogen to destabilize the protective coatings that are an integral part of satisfactory engine performance is a subject that needs to be addressed. Results detailing significant differences across various material systems and environmental conditions are presented.
