Green & Low-Carbon Hydrogen in the US: focus on certification & transparency for global market access
With its abundance of renewable resources and a strong internal energy market, the US are uniquely positioned as producer and offtaker of green & low carbon hydrogen. Hydrogen council estimates that, by 2050, 25% of the total amount of hydrogen & derivatives produced will be traded. However, the scale up of national market and access to the global market will heavily depend on the mechanisms guaranteeing the transparency and verifying the carbon footprint associated to the production process. In our contribution to the session, we will give overall recommendations on how to approach the certification process for smooth global market access. We will first talk about the role of the US in the accelerating H2 economy, then we will focus on the importance of the certification for H2 export and import, with an overview on the existing certification schemes in relation to national and international standards for Green and low-carbon H2.
